This plugin allows you to get better control on how your links are listed. It provides a widget which lets you get more options than the default WordPress links widget (show image, description, etc.). Furthermore, it allows to hide the links in the categories and use clickable buttons to expand them.

The plugin requires jQuery to be included in your theme if you want expandable/contractable categories. However, it degrades nicely to the usual WordPress links list when javascript is not available.
